Purina Pro Plan PURINA PRO PLAN Dog Large Adult Athletic : Excellent Dry Dog Food

Firstly this bag is massive, and very heavy and bulky. If you have a small house or flat and space is limited i’d avoid it. If not an issue, you can be reassured it’s a strong reinforced sack that doesn’t tear easily. The kibbles are quite large and chunky, about the size of standard gravel. They have a distinct quite unpleasant odour but then this is dog food so it’s to be expected and if it didn’t smell of fish i’d be concerned. Purina claims this is full of vitamins and minerals and as its fish based will aid sensitive skin. My dog is having issues with the heat and coupled with flea season this means his skin and coat gets quite dry and itchy. It’s not going to work miracles but after a few days of feeding him this i did notice a reduction in itching. He is also a bit more energetic and i believe this is down to the extra nutrients. I have found purina food to be very good quality based on past products and this is no exception, and he seems to like the product. The only downside is the price. It’s very expensive and i’m just not totally convinced it’s worth the extra. Yes you get absolutely loads of dog food and if you have several dogs it may be worth it, but personally i’d stick to the smaller cheaper bags offered by purina.

Love this food for my bulldog who is now a. Love this food for my bulldog who is now a junior. It suits her where others just go through his system. Its a good size kibble for a large dog. When i feed it i add raw minced chicken or raw lamb mince. Ive bought this food loads of times and left many reviews on it as well. You can see my dog is a big fan. If you want a food of good value then i suggest you go for this with added meat.

Palitable and has kept our dog away from the vet this summer with his usual itching problems. . Purina pro plan dog large adult athletic with sensitive skin with optiderma rich in salmon dry food 14kgwe have given this to our poodle collie cross who does get very itchy in the summer. There is plenty of good ingredients and omega complexes in here that should help with skin problems. The normal fillers that seem to cause the itching are absent in this food as far as i can see from the ingredients list. Our poodle cross enjoys the food so there has been no problem with him eating it. It does smell a bit fishy but that is to be expected. I think the strong smell is why he likes it so much. The bag lasted around 3 weeks and there was definitely a noticeable reducing in itching and scratching. So on our dog it does what it is supposed to do. #it agrees with our dog and we have seen a noticeable reduction in itching without the use of vet prescribed creams and shampoos that we normally need in the summer. It is expensive but compared to the vets visits and all the associated costs it is much cheaper overall. Here are the specifications for the Purina Pro Plan PURINA PRO PLAN Dog Large Adult Athletic:

Smelly but could be a good longer-term addition to their diet. What’s good:good-sized bag of foodgood consistency of contentspopular with the houndswhat’s not so good:quite priceya bit smelly (as expected)we used this food with two large and getting-on-a-bit white setters. They have never been fussy with food – eating whatever gets within reach whether intended for them or not. They also have traditionally suffered a bit with their skin, always getting sores and constantly trying to tend to themselves. We live in a rural area so there are lots of fields that they probably are a bit sensitive to. As such, this ‘sensitive skin with optiderma’ piqued our interest. We have been using it for the past couple of days, mixed in with their usual mix of foods as we don’t like to go whole-hog on a singular foodstuff as we don’t want them to become fussy. Both dogs were particularly intrigued by this food, probably because it has salmon in it and we don’t tend to buy much fish-based food for them – but so far so good as they are keen on this new mix we are giving them, and their digestive systems are as-yet unaffected. Obviously almost £50 for a sack of food is always going to be a tough pill to swallow, but it goes with the territory and we both agree this food has made a good addition to the mix which we will consider again.

Delicious fish dinners can help with skin problems. My two large (and athletic) five year old show springers munch this up and lick the bowl after. The kibble is chunky, bigger than the bite size nuggets more usually provided, but that just made it all the more fun for them. The aroma is of salmon, fishy, which is fine by us. Sensitive skin can have many causes, flea allergy, other allergy, even genetic predisposition, and so a vet is the best person to diagnose the cause; but one easy one to eliminate is diet, therefore choosing a fish based dry food is a sensible way to go. Shiny coats, bright eyes, an eagerness for exercise, plenty of life, sound sleep when taken, all these factors add up to the ideal for our pets – feeding them top quality purina food certainly seems to appeal and work well.

Reviews from purchasers :

  • Decent tasting food (apparently, going by Bella’s reaction), not too bad on the human nose, but these are LARGE!
  • Palitable and has kept our dog away from the vet this summer with his usual itching problems.

Great news was that i had no surprises waiting for. Purina pro plan, large athletic dog. Well the proof of the pudding is in the tasting but even before i had opened the bag my dog knew something was happening. The back was a revelation, no scissors or ripping needed here, just gently pull apart the seal and the bag is fully open. Inside the biscuits (predictably large) were moist and had my dog drooling before the bowl was full. It wasn’t full for long either as he worked his way through them with gusto. He’s got a sensitive tummy and we have to be careful what we give him or he gives it back to us during the night. Great news was that i had no surprises waiting for me in the morning. He’s happy as usual and full of beans. Stools solid and no terrible wind.

Our lab staffy cross has had dandruff on and off for years. We used to think it was predominantly caused by stress but we’d also notice it would flair after changes of dry dog food. He’s now getting into his senior years and his joints are playing him up too. As omega 3 and fish oils are a long renowned treatment this seems an ideal product for him. Ok its early days so far in him eating this but the signs are good on many fronts. First things first the change over hasn’t had a noticable affect on his digestion which is always a worry when changing their diets. Secondly the bit of dandruff he had prior to starting on this food now appears to have gonethirdly he seems already to be a little less stiff when getting up after one of his long evening snoozes. None of this is scientific proven obviously but we have a happy satisfied pooch who we think we can see improvements in already so whats not to like?.Oh well maybe except the price of this food.

  1. Good for the skin and the tastebuds (according to my dog). I was initially drawn to a bag of pro plan optiderma salmon sensitive skin large breed robust adult dog food which my dog enjoyed immensely. The difference between the two seemingly amounting to the words ‘athletic’ and ‘robust’. While i’d like to consider my golden retriever athletic, he is now nine and not as active as he used to be. And as far i can tell, this athletic one carries more calories (added fat and protein). As for the taste, he wolfed down both. Impressive considering the relatively large kibble size. Either way, i couldn’t detect a preference. And he’s a terrible scratcher too and no raw patches have appeared, so for the second time it’s a wholehearted recommendation. However, unless i’m told otherwise, i think the robust variety would be best for him on a regular basis.

Good food mixture for dogs with sensitive skins. Purina “pro plan” dog food for large adult athletic with optiderma for sensitive skinpurina, part of the nestle group is a high profile producer of pet foods and within it’s stable are such well known products as winalot, bonio, beta, bakers and of course pro plan. They claim to be one of the leaders in pet care and pet nutrition and now demonstrate this by adding a number of variants aimed at specific sized dogs and those with particular issues like sensitive digestion and. Those needing care with their joints like the older dogs. This variant is for active breeds with sensitive skins to help reduce itching and scratching. Is this true or just good marketing ?. Well it’s probably a bit of both. It is certainly true that they occupy one of the top places in pet food production and as everyone knows, you don’t get there if your products are not good. Pet owners will buy once then move on if they and their pets don’t like the food. Some of their products like winalot and bonio have been market leaders for decades and not by accident.

    1. I was hoping that this would be the cure for ruby the great dane’s constant scratching that has me scratching in sympathy. She doesn’t have fleas but she does have short downy hair which is constantly shedding. Unfortunately she wasn’t too keen on the stuff and would turn her nose up at it. I suspect that she’s too used to dinner leftovers and, as we all know, they can be very tasty indeed. Unfortunately this meant i could not test it properly but had to donate it to the dogs trust who were very happy to accept it. On that basis i cannot mark it down because of one spoiled great dane. On a practical note the resealable packaging was useful.

  5. My biggest dog has long fluffy hair and has always been a bit itchy. It doesnt go down well when he sits scratching behind his ears with his back leg; people think he has fleas. He doesnt, he just has itchy skin. I’ve used salmon oil on his food for this inthe past which seems to help, so was happy to try this kibble. So far, he eats it happily and seems to enjoy it. It doesnt smell bad, leaves the bowl clean and the bag is resealable.

This is a large 14kg bag of purina pro plan dog food for a large breed 25 kg plus. The food is designed for sensitive dogs prone to scratching or itchy skin. The product does not contain gluten. Ingredients;salmon (15%), maize, rice (14%), dehydrated salmon protein, maize gluten meal, animal fat, maize grits, soya meal, digest, dried beet pulp, dried egg, minerals, dried chicory root, fish oil, soybean oil. Also available in a chicken variety. The dry biscuit i found a bit sticky so if you use your hands to fill the bowl there is a sticky residue left. There is a slight odour but not strong, acceptable. The bowl can become sticky if not cleaned straight after use. If opened per instructions the bag can be folded over to keep things fresh.

      1. We haven’t gone wrong with dog food from purina. With rubes being a bull mastiff, this 14kg bag will last a couple of days whilst she munches away with such gusto i swear she doesn’t take a breath. The good thing about this particular kibble is that it overwhelm your senses or the house. Obviously i can’t vouch for rubes as smell doesn’t bother her but the quality of the kibble does.

That makes it very good value per meal. First of all check that you can carry and store this at home: it’s a weighty bag. That makes it very good value per meal. Like my previous bag this food is much enjoyed by beast no 2 and it’s always consumed at breakneck speed- for me it’s not a strong smell when opening and serving and the pieces are manageable in size if he bolts his meal. Dogs love this food unquestionably and i think it’s great value for money.

My german shepherds thrive on it. . Both my large, active adult german shepherd dogs have sensitive stomachs and sensitive skin. Both are also very fickle when it comes to their food. So this purina pro plan complete dog food produced for large adult, athletic dogs with sensitive skin, is clearly a real no-brainer for me. Although relatively expensive, both my dogs have thrived on it and cannot wait for their meals, clearing their bowls on every occasion. Their coats shine and their skins have been problem free during the use of this product. No digestion issues have been noticed and their stools are normal in colour and consistency. This purina salmon dry dog food is virtually indistinguishable from other types of purina dry dog foods that we have tried in the past, in that it comes in uneven sized large chunks, with little if any residue or mess, either in or out of the ideal large resealable bag. Some reviewers describe this purina food as odour free but i can detect the slight smell of salmon upon which it is based.

      1. A dedicated food from one of the brand leaders. . Quickly taken to by my dog, this product looks like another winner from purina. I am hoping that the fish content and targeted skin-sensitive ingredients will help with his skin condition too. The kibbles are large enough for him to crunch, and keep their shape and consistency when mixed with meat as well. It is too early to say whether the claims for improvements in skin problems are valid, but the first couple of days have at least confirmed that he enjoys eating it, with no side effects from any change in diet. If there is significant improvement later, i will update the review.

    1. According to our very (some might say hyper) active australian shepherd anyway. He leaves nothing in his bowl. And so far (after 5 days) he has shown no adverse effects such as stomach upset or loose stools. The kibble itself is of reasonable size, giving him something to crunch on. The ingredients boast real salmon and other fish oils which, with their natural omega 3, etc i have always liked to give my dogs in one form or another, to keep their joints in good health. Though at circa 15% dehydrated salmon its not the highest level of real oily fish content kibble on the market. Not that that is necessarily the most important consideration for everyone. There’s also a fair amount of maize content too, which not all dog lovers will like.

This is a high quality dry food from purina. The kibbles are suitably sized for dogs to chew easily and the ingredients listed should ensure good health in the future. It is suitable as the main course or can also be used as a mixer.

      1. Decent tasting food (apparently, going by bella’s reaction), not too bad on the human nose, but these are large. Ok, bella the fox terrier isn’t the largest dog, but she’s a very active one and burns a lot of energy, and she’s always hungry. She tends to eat smaller amounts of good quality food, as this suits her. Emissions and clean-up tends to be a doddle, and at roughly anticipate-able times. I was a little wary of starting her on something new, so introduced these mixed in with her regular food, and made sure that she had plenty of water, and not too large a quantity. So far, over 48hrs, there’s been no tummy upset, no difficulty getting her small but long snout around these, and her emissions haven’t changed noticeably. I’m going to increase the amount she gets slowly til she’s solely on this food, and will report back. As to the nutritional content?. Clearly, all/most allergens have been removed from this food, but the protein content isn’t quite as high as i’d like, unlike the i**s brand that miss b is currently on. Both are fairly similar in price, but the other bags are easier to store due to the largest being about 3kg in weight.

    1. Poppy really loves them – hoping for improvement with her itchy skin. An easy to open and re-seal, simply massive sack (14 kilos – it is a big pack, something to be aware of if storage is a problem) of nice sized kibble pieces for ‘large, athletic’ dogs – it is really aimed at larger dogs than our lakeland/jack russell cross poppy, but she enjoys a larger biscuit so i knew she would be happy with these and takes small portions with gusto and clear enjoyment. The biscuits have a light, clean smell – they don’t smell at all strong to me, but poppy’s interest was immediate, even when the sack was still sealed in its amazon box. Though she won’t eat fish, she does love fishy treats and this ‘rich in salmon’ formula does seem to suit her tastes perfectly; she loves to crunch them in her dinner bowl and as a walking treat. I particularly wanted this formula for her as she suffers very badly with a seasonal allergy that causes very itchy skin. She scratches herself raw sometimes and only constant bathing to remove the pollen – sometimes as often as 6 times a day – does anything to help. I can’t say i’ve noticed any improvement in her skin condition yet, but she’s only been having the biscuits for three days so far and i will update this review in a month or two with results whether or not the condition improves. As a general food-biscuit, aimed at an active, athletic dog like our young terrier, it seems well balanced, she certainly enjoys it and supplemented with a little meat, should provide excellent nutrition. The one thing i can say so far is that her sometimes loose bowels have firmed up wonderfully so it is clearly agreeing with her occasionally risky digestion. So far, we are very pleased and would definitely buy this product again.

This certainly seems to be a winner. It disappears very fast and appears to be having a beneficial health effect. It isn’t too stinky- a common problem with much dog food; even better it doesn’t seem to contribute to the lovely silent but deadly stinkiness that dogs can be prone tothe bag is super easy to open. The size of the bag lasts a good while.
